California Seizes Over 63,000 Pounds of Illegal Cannabis in Three Months

California authorities seized more than 63,000 pounds of illegal cannabis over a three-month period, according to the California State Portal. The scale of the haul underscores persistent unlicensed cultivation and distribution despite the state's mature legal market, which currently includes 1,253 open retail locations and 4,426 active cultivation licenses.

The enforcement action comes as the state's licensed supply chain continues to shift. Recent license roster updates show multiple ownership changes—including transfers to OFF THE CHARTS operations and The Outpost entities—alongside new distribution and delivery approvals. Four licenses were also marked inactive in late July, suggesting ongoing industry consolidation.

The large seizure suggests illicit operations remain economically viable in California, likely due to tax and regulatory cost advantages. Whether the state's licensing momentum—reflected in active applications and recent new operator approvals—will further compress the black market remains a key question for regulators tracking next quarter's enforcement metrics.
