Terp City opens new retail license in South Dakota medical market
Terp City receives retail dispensary license as South Dakota market consolidates amid wave of closures.
FILE — retail · My 420 Tours / CC BY-SA 4.0Terp City has received a new retail license in South Dakota, according to state license records dated August 15. The company now operates both a medical cannabis cultivation license in Watertown and a dispensary license in Aberdeen, expanding its footprint in the state's medical-only market.
The opening arrives amid significant churn in South Dakota's retail sector. State records show at least 11 retail closures since early August, including multiple Royzzz locations and operators like Dakota Health and Wellness, Superior Buds, and The Broken Boot Dispensary. Genesis Farms also received a new retail license on the same date. South Dakota currently has 53 active retail licenses and 31 cultivation operations.
The net effect remains unclear: whether Terp City's entry signals operator confidence or simply reflects license transfers within a market contracting overall. Watch whether the state's pending application queue and total active license count stabilize or continue declining in coming months.
